EWA, 1984-95
“EWA is conceived as personal expert system, the first version was written in 1984. Over the years, it went through a series of many major revisions running on many different hardware configurations. EWA introduced a significant swing in my creative thinking. It made a shift from abstract procedural models to viewing software as a cognitive device allowing the formulation of aspects of human creativity. Important, the use of expert system technology differs from its conventional use in Artificial Intelligence; my approach to knowledge based systems is profoundly exploratory – rules are viewed as discovery machines, not as specifications of explicit knowledge.
EWA grows (new functionality is added) while its creative prospective is being considered by the programmer. Therefore, it is not totally autonomous, it acts more as an extension of the creative belief system of an external programmer. EWA is viewed as a collaborative companion in the process of aesthetic decision-making.” Peter Beyls, 2013
